Our History

Episcopal worshippers gathered in St. Marys in the early 1800s. The parish acquired the Wheeler Street property in 1843–1844, and the first church, known as the Church of the Messiah, was built in 1845–1846.

After the original church was destroyed by fire during the Civil War, worship resumed in 1885. The present chapel was consecrated in 1889. The congregation began using the name Christ Church in the early 1930s and received parish status in March 1988.

A larger sanctuary was later built beside the chapel. Children wrote Bible verses on its studs and floors, and parishioner Glenn Sculthrope crafted the wooden cross and sanctuary furnishings.

Remembering the Purdy Oak

On September 26, 2026, Christ Church gathered to celebrate the life of the Purdy Oak and honor its history. Its place in our shared memory lives on through photographs and parish recollections.
